Picture this: You’re strolling through the enchanting woods of Sakai Park, and suddenly, you stumble upon an 18-foot-tall wonder crafted from recycled wood, standing proudly amidst the trees. It’s not a creature from folklore, but rather the captivating creation of Copenhagen-based artist Thomas Dambo. Meet Pia the Peacekeeper, a troll who has found her home on Bainbridge Island.
Pia’s story is one of community, imagination, and the remarkable power of art. Crafted from the dreams of artists and the unwavering support of individuals, businesses, and organizations, she embodies the essence of unity and creativity within the Bainbridge Island community.
The journey of bringing Pia to life was made possible by the Scan Design Foundation, igniting the flames of Danish-American relations with a touch of environmental sustainability. Their support paved the way for this unique public art undertaking. But that’s not all – the community was also excited about helping, with contributions pouring in from businesses and community members, both big and small.
The Making of a Troll
Dawn Janow, a dedicated member of the Bainbridge Island Park District Board, championed Pia’s cause, uniting local partners and acting as a driving force behind this artistic marvel. The Park District played a central role, serving as the site partner and orchestrating collaborative efforts that breathed life into Pia.
Pia’s creation was a true community effort. From the skilled hands of Thomas Dambo’s team to the dedication of the Park Services crew, Scout Troop 1496, Cub Scout Pack 4496, and countless volunteers, everyone played a crucial role. They worked tirelessly for seven days, transforming into the “Troll Patrol” by night, responsibly managing the site and tools.
Pia’s Awakening
On the memorable morning of August 19, 2023, at 8:19 am, Pia officially woke up to the tunes of music and celebration, embraced by her new Bainbridge Island family.
Thomas Dambo, known as the world’s leading recycle artist, has left his mark across the globe with his troll sculptures. The Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King is his latest venture, connecting cultural heritage with environmental stewardship. Bainbridge Island is fortunate to be one of the six partner sites for this remarkable project, where six hand-crafted troll sculptures now grace our landscape.
More Than Art
Pia the Peacekeeper is more than just a sculpture; she’s a storyteller. Woven into her form is the narrative of environmental harmony, resonating with the Park District’s commitment to stewardship. Through Pia, we celebrate the interplay of art and nature, reinforcing our dedication to nurturing a community that values, protects, and celebrates our parks, open spaces, and cultural heritage.
This initiative emphasizes our shared values in preserving the environment, particularly in safeguarding watersheds, restoring ecosystems, and upholding riparian habitats. Pia’s presence on traditional Coast Salish territories also highlights the importance of honoring our indigenous roots, including the Suquamish people, whose ancestral lands include Bainbridge Island.
A Playful Guardian
According to her creator, Thomas Dambo, Pia is a playful yet formidable troll, a reminder that art can be both enchanting and powerful. So, as you embark on your own off-the-beaten-path adventures, remember Pia and the incredible journey that brought her to life, a journey that celebrates community, imagination, and the beauty of doing things a little differently.
Don’t upset Pia; you might just lose a leg of your own – metaphorically speaking, of course!
