Birth of a National Park
Mount Rainier became America’s fifth national park on March 2, 1899, when President William McKinley signed landmark conservation legislation. The path to protection began in 1893 when the area was designated as the Pacific Forest Reserve, then became Mount Rainier Forest Reserve in 1897.
Key advocates included John Muir, who climbed Mount Rainier in 1888 and wrote passionately about the experience, helping secure park protection. Geologist Bailey Willis started the campaign for national park status in 1893, while forest agent Cyrus Mosier recommended keeping the area “unsullied” for a “great public park.”
Congress dedicated the park “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people” and “for the preservation from injury or spoliation of all timber, mineral deposits, natural curiosities, or wonders within said park”, establishing principles that would guide American conservation for generations.
Mountaineering History and Tragedy
Mount Rainier’s climbing history began with the first documented ascent on August 17, 1870, by Hazard Stevens and Philemon Beecher Van Trump, guided by Sluiskin, a Yakama guide. Sluiskin was so convinced they would die that he promised to wait two days before reporting their deaths, making their successful return to Olympia’s streets a hero’s welcome.
