Along the way

Detour is measured in driving time via each place, not map distance — across water those are wildly different things, and only one of them tells you whether to stop.

Ferries. The router sails most crossings itself — Mukilteo–Clinton, Vashon, Point Defiance–Tahlequah, Coupeville–Port Townsend, the San Juans — and the planner adds the four it does not know: Seattle–Bainbridge, Seattle–Bremerton, Edmonds–Kingston and Fauntleroy–Southworth. When sailing and driving around are both reasonable you get both to choose from. Crossing times are counted; waits at the dock are not, so check the WSF schedule.
